Position Summary:
Cincinnati Public Schools is seeking applicants for the position of Sign Language Interpreter working with the teachers who need sign language interpreters to assist with instruction.  All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education:           2 year Interpreter Training Program or enrolled in an ITP program.
Licensure:           Must be a RID certified interpreter (holding NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master, CI and/or CT, IC and/or TC, CSC, & NAD III, IV, or V) or a BEI certified interpreter.
Experience:         Previous experience interpreting in an educational setting desired.

DUTIES

Interpreters are specially trained individuals who will facilitate communication between students and staff.
The interpreter’s duties are not only specific to the teacher assigned, but they also serve as a member of the educational team. The duties of the interpreter are as follows:

  • Interpret oral communication into sign language and signed communication into spoken English.
  • Convey the content of the message clearly and accurately.
  • Adhere to the rules of confidentiality required of all school personnel.
  • Work collaboratively with the educational team.
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments including the vocabulary and content knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Assist in communication throughout the building during instructional periods and student parent meetings.
  • Report to building principal.
  • Supervision will be in conjunction with the general education teacher(s) and the hearing specialist.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 
The interpreter has specialized skills and training in the area of sign language. The interpreter’s role is not to perform duties as a licensed teacher or to replace a teacher.
