TITLE:                                  Help Desk Technician 

SALARY:                              $29.42  hourly

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

This position, under the general direction of  the administrative supervisor, provides support relative to the maintenance, operation and usage of student information software systems and client server systems.  Develop procedures for and performing tasks relative to the system software and hardware.  Identify and resolve user support issues.  Provide training and instructions for system users.  Ensure the Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) goals, technology, and information standards are followed.

 

 

WHO MAY COMPETE ON THE EXAM:  All classified, permanent employees with the Cincinnati Public Schools who meet the qualifications listed below as of  Friday, October 11, 2024.  All required experience must be with the Cincinnati Public Schools and must have occurred within the last (5) five years. IT IS THE POLICY OF THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION THAT TEMPORARY TRANSFER AND/OR PROMOTION TIME WILL NOT BE COUNTED FOR EXAMINATION ELIGIBILITY PURPOSES (CIVIL SERVICE RULE 10, SECTION 2 – 8/3/89).

 


REQUIRED SERVICE RATING: 
Last two out of three performance reviews must be satisfactory.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of satisfactory service in a position using software supported by CPS Student Information Systems with satisfactory completion of training provided by CPS training personnel in the use of district student information systems (a minimum of 18 quarter or 12 semester credits of appropriate courses from either an accredited college or university, which includes successful completion of a computer course, may be substituted for one year of the service requirement.)

 

Must be a Senior Support Specialist / Student Services Technician I with CPS and have passed their initial probationary period.


PROBATIONARY PERIOD:     
120 working days

 

EXAMPLES OF REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA's)

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • principles of database structure.
  • software programs used by CPS, such as Focus, CPS Web-Based Applications, Cognos
  • Canvas and Microsoft Office, or sufficient training and/or experience in such software, to perform effectively in the position with reasonable training.
  • SQL query language or other query tools.
  • basic tenets of effective customer service.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • logic and reasoning principles used in problem solving techniques.
  •  basic mathematical principles.

  •  K-12 public school operation advanced understanding of windows and mac operating systems.

 

ABILITY TO: 

  • become thoroughly knowledgeable of the features and functions of all district student 

        information software and to serve as a subject matter expert.

  •  use problem solving techniques to provide first level troubleshooting support for end-users of    

        district student information software programs, or escalate the job order to the right 

        department for resolution as needed.

  •  Identify and resolve user support issues and perform and/or coordinate user instructions and 

         training relative to district student information software programs.

  •  provide constant and consistent phone support to end-users of the supported software by 

         staffing a phone center Help Desk.

  •  successfully complete assigned training as needed to become proficient/certified in new 

         software packages adopted by the district for student information gathering.

  •  adapt to new processes and technologies and become proficient in their use.

  •  develop or instruct others to develop ad hoc query reports, using tools provided.

  •  meet schedules and deadlines for production of assigned reports, files, etc.

         maintain composure in stressful situations.

  •  establish and maintain effective working relationships with end-users.

  •  communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, particularly technical  

          information to users of varying familiarity with the technical aspects of the system.

         utilize a PC and related software required to perform job activities.

  •  work occasional overtime and other than normal day shift to meet assignment schedules.

Must have a valid driver's license.

SUBJECTS AND WEIGHTS OF TEST SECTIONS:         
The selection process is worth 100% of the exam grade and consists of a written exam.  The passing score will be determined after the examination by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Secretary. Determination of the passing score will be based on the job analysis, analysis of examination results, consultation with subject matter experts or other professional methods. 


PROMOTIONAL: GENERAL INFORMATION

1.   ELIGIBILITY: Civil Service promotional exams are open to classified permanent employees only, who meet the eligibility and qualification requirements stated in the announcement.  Unclassified and certificated employees are    not eligible to participate in these exams.

2.   FILING APPLICATIONS:  Must be submitted through http://www.cps-k12.org, click on Apply for a job with CPS and Online Application System; Internal Postings; Clerical and Office Personnel. Applications must be received no later than stated deadline.

3.   TRANSCRIPTS: ( IF NEEDED, NO LATER THAN THE DEALINE DATE FOR FILING APPLICATIONS). PLEASE NOTE:  Copies of unofficial versions or internet printouts of transcripts are NOT acceptable.

4.   ALTERNATE TEST DATE, TIME, LOCATION OR NECESSARY ASSISTANCE IN TAKING THE EXAM:  Contact Margaret Key in advance of the test date at (513) 363-0206.

5.    PASSING SCORE: The passing score will be determined after the examination by the exam analyst, based on the job analysis, exam result analysis, consultation with subject matter expert, and/or other professional methods.

6.    SENIORITY CREDIT:  A passing score on the written, oral and/or practical test must be achieved before credits for seniority will be given.  A credit of one (1) point for completion of the first four years of creditable service and 0.6 points for completion of each of the next ten (10) years of such service will be added to the total exam grade.  A maximum of seven (7) points for seniority for 14 years of creditable service can be added.  To receive credit, service must have been continuous and with the City of Cincinnati, the Board, and/or the University of Cincinnati (including General/University Hospital) service up to July 1, 1977, when the University went under State control.
